This is a guidebook for wordsmiths. Its aim is to remove confusion between commonly misused words, not to delineate every possible meaning of the words. So it gives the central meaning from which others are formed. For example, ?boil? (to turn to steam) and ?broil? (to cook by direct heat). ?Boil? also means to cook in boiling water, which can be inferred from the meaning of ?boil'. Where a word has multiple separate and distinct meanings, all are given when that word can also be confused with others. For example, ?bore? means to pierce as well as dull or tiresome but may be confused with ?boor?, ?boar? and ?Boer'. Where a word has variant spellings and multiple meanings, like ?bogey?, ?bogy? and ?bogie?, the sources? weight of opinion was used to determine the primary and alternative spellings. This book in based on English spellings and identifies US spellings where appropriate.
