Whereas other fields continue to become more complex and specialized, physiology happily remains an area that can still be understood by thinking from first principles. However, given the increasing quantity of information available today, it is easy to become overly concerned with details and give in to the temptation to memorize rather than understand. In this concise book, the authors convey their enthusiasm for physiology and convincingly persuade the reader that with a sound understanding of principles, details often fall effortlessly into place. It is by no means an attempt to produce another comprehensive textbook. Instead, a broad overview of the subject is presented, covering areas that are not given the attention they deserve in other texts whilst purposely omitting those aspects where memorization is an unfortunate necessity.

RESEARCH METHODS AND STATISTICS: A CRITICAL THINKING APPROACH, 5th Edition, successfully illustrates the integration between statistics and research methods by demonstrating the ways to use statistics in analyzing data collected during research. Jackson's combined text adopts an inviting narrative style that speaks directly to students and draws them into the material, helping them overcome the initial apprehension they may feel at having to learn both subject areas at once. Focusing on the logic of the process and the methodology aspect of research, Jackson incorporates a student-friendly critical-thinking approach and presents examples and exercises to which students can relate. Despite the widespread use of psychophysiological concepts and meth ods in behavior therapy, there is no text devoted specifically to the subject. The publication of this book is necessary and timely, and should promote a better appreciation of the physiological roots of behavior therapy. The important connections between physiology and behavior thera py receive insufficient recognition nowadays, despite the fact that his torically one of the two main streams of behavior therapy grew out of a physiological basis. Wolpe's early work was closely connected to phys iology, and in contemporary behavior therapy, Lang's critical contribu tion is firmly based in psychophysiology. The physiological component is prominent in Lang's highly productive three-systems analysis of emo tion and in its application to psychological disorders. In addition, there are philosophical reasons for maintaining the close connection between behavior therapy and physiology. The existence of these connections, and their justification, can raise few objections, and it is therefore curious that a book on this significant subject has not appeared earlier. The importance of physiology for behavior therapy can be illus trated by considering the nature of a behavior therapy deprived of its physiological connections. It would survive, certainly, but as a rather scrawny, uninteresting orphan among many clamorous competitors.
