When the famous and financially successful baths in his home town are contaminated, the local doctor insists they be shut down for expensive repairs, causing upheaval among the townsfolk.
When Dr. Stockmann discovers that the water in the small Norwegian town in which he is the resident physician has been contaminated, he does what any responsible citizen would do: reports it to the authorities. But Stockmann's good deed has the potential to ruin the town's reputation as a popular spa destination, and instead of being hailed as a hero, Stockmann is labeled an enemy of the people. Arthur Miller's adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's classic drama is a classic in itself, a penetrating exploration of what happens when the truth comes up against the will of the majority. This edition includes Arthur Miller’s preface and an introduction by John Guare. A fresh and contemporary translation of Ibsen's An Enemy of the People by Nicholas Rudall.
You don't want to go to war on this, Tom. I mean, not now. Not after everything. You don't want to lose more than you can afford. Brad Birch (Pinter Commission winner, 2016) takes Ibsen's An Enemy of the People into the centre of a very modern scandal. How does Tom Stockmann keep both people and press on side when he makes a discovery about the town's prestigious new Spa? A taut and rigorous adaptation of Ibsen's classic play, En Folkfiende examines the faultlines of municipal power as media, politics and the public good come head to head in a thrilling drama of the conflict between the personal and the public. En Folkefiende premiered at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in May 2016 ahead of a production at the Pleasance, Edinburgh, in August 2016.
Arthur Miller's version of Ibsen's most explosive play. An Enemy of the People tells the story of an idealistic doctor, Stockmann, who discovers that the waters from which his native spa town draws its wealth are dangerously contaminated. As the citizens realise the financial implications, Stockmann comes under increasing pressure to keep silent.
An Enemy of the People is a five-act drama about one Doctor Thomas Stockmann, a medical officer who finds the water in the public baths to be contaminated. When he refuses to be silenced, he is declared an "enemy of the people". The Wild Duck is a five-act drama about the Ekdal family and one man, Gregers Werle, who has an unfortunate compulsion to always tell the "truth", no matter what the cost. That is, he reveals to the family unasked-for information about each family member's past. This unsolicited knowledge eventually destroys their family life, as well as the Ekdals' daughter, who kills herself after one of Werle's revelations.
