This research examines the historical, cultural and gendered dimensions of the contemporary practice of curanderismo, a religiously inflected form of ethnomedicine, within the South Texas borderlands using San Antonio as a primary research site. Madsen (1964a, 1964b), Saunders (1954) and Kiev (1968) concluded that curanderismo was a relic of "traditional" societies and increasingly abandoned by acculturated Mexican Americans and Keefe (1981), Edgerton, Karno and Fernandez (1970) and others suggest it is dying out. This research challenges these findings and maintains that curanderismo is changing in South Texas through increasing commercialization of folk healing beliefs and practices. Some curanderas/os, female and male healers respectively, are diversifying by going increasingly outside close social ties to solicit clients and increasing their use of a fee-based economic system. Also, individuals are engaging in self-treatment, building idiosyncratic healing techniques without consulting traditional healers, opting instead to procure materials and information from local specialty shops called botánicas or yerberias that specialize in herbs, candles, charms and other goods. Lastly, curanderismo is increasingly being informed by other cultural medical ideologies not only internationally, across the U.S./Mexico border, but also transnationally across the globe. This research is important because it is a window into the lives of South Texas Mexican Americans and an avenue for studying the intersections of cultural identity, gender, health and the political economy of ritual by showing how differentially situated Mexican Americans view curanderismo and its changes and what is ventured in their contestations or accommodation of its concepts and practices.

The book explains for the general reader the history and present practice of curanderismo--Mexican American folk healing practices--and gives biographical sketches of three famous nineteenth century folk healers--Don Pedrito Jaramillo, Nino Fidencio, and Teresita Urrea. Characteristics and training of curanderos, or healers, are discussed and the specialties within curanderismo are explained. Eleven common ailments and symptoms treated by curanderos, rituals used, and folk beliefs dealing with everyday occurrences are described.
