This thesis analyzes the concept of frugal innovation. Frugal innovation is a special type of resource-constrained innovation and targets costumers in low-income markets with frugal products that have significantly lower price points than existing solutions. They are customized to meet the specific requirements of the local market context, which are usually not addressed by products developed for Western markets. This work addresses the question of how Western multinational companies (MNCs) can organize and mange frugal innovation successfully as they have mainly served high-end segments. Existing literature and case studies of frugal innovation mainly adopted a product-centric view and derived success factors for building up capabilities internally in order to develop the frugal product. This thesis considers the development of the business model and partner network as an integral part of the innovation process and therefore focuses on a broader perspective on the concept of frugal innovation. The first part of the thesis offers a broad literature review, which lays the foundation for the in-depth analysis of two case studies of Scandinavian MNCs, which developed a frugal innovation for low-income costumers in Africa. The main finding of this study is that open business models support and facilitate the development of a frugal innovation. Building up capabilities not only internally but also externally through local partnerships to access tangible and intangible resources is a key success factor for frugal innovation.
