Renaissance humanism takes as one of its subjects for inquiry the category of the human itself. As Intricate Movements: Experimental Thinking and Human Analogies in Sidney and Spenser shows, late sixteenth-century English poets found some remarkably radical ways to interrogate and redefine the status of humans. The recent vogue for posthumanist theory encourages a view of non-human objects and animals in Renaissance literature as pathways to essentially anti-humanist thought. On the contrary, this book argues that Sidney, Spenser, and their contemporaries employ animals, earth, buildings, and fictions as analogies employed toward a better understanding of what makes humans a special category, both ontologically and ethically. Horses and riders are studied by Sidney as a way to understand readers and writers; the 1580 Dover Straits Earthquake provides Spenser and Gabriel Harvey an opportunity to explore human emotion; liturgical spaces are represented by Sidney and Spenser in order to reassess human community; and fictional persons are interrogated by Spenser as models for human interpersonal epistemology. This volume seeks to return critical assessments of the period's engagement with the non-human back to human concerns. Focusing on several early modern analogies between human and non-human entities, Intricate Movements argues Sidney's and Spenser's thinking about the human is both radically experimental and, ultimately, humane.
Practical suggestions, and documentary evidence, for performers wishing to understand the gestures and nuances embedded in eighteenth-century musical notation.
Offers a radical new thesis about Jane Austen's construction of her art and recreates substantial area of her mental and imaginative life.
This twenty-eight year journey toward clarity and integrity has, in a nutshell, exposed simple windows of human choice. From choice comes humanity or the lack thereof. God provided the planet, and he often reminds us that we are mere tenants. We, as the evolved human occupants, create the culture through free will. I believe that, over the past twenty-eight years, our choices have been more clearly exposed and defined than ever before. The communication age has given us a real-time, up-front view to clearly experience each lesson. If clarity is what you seek, the windows presented here will be of great value. Periodically, we are ushered back to the basics, when a reset of our human barometer, which measures our collective value to our planet and ourselves, is needed. We must not lose our true spiritual and compassionate humanity to the negative, debilitating acts of some. “Think, and ‘should’ no more” is the ultimate theme throughout this journey. Finding a path which allows us to “Step Out Of The Shoulds” is, in itself, worthy of the journey. Our lives begin with “had to breathe” and end with “had to stop breathing.” Had, have, and should are the metaphoric brick and mortar of our physical lives, between our first and last breath. As I have progressed in life, it became an apparent fact that “shoulds don’t count.”
Agriculture and the mechanic arts are the basis of civilization.

For forty years, this widely acclaimed classic has remained unsurpassed as an introduction to art in the Western world, boasting the matchless credibility of the Janson name. This newest update features a more contemporary, more colorful design and vast array of extraordinarily produced illustrations that have become the Janson hallmark. A narrative voice makes this book a truly enjoyable read, and carefully reviewed and revised updates to this edition offer the utmost clarity in contributions based on recent scholarship. Extensive captions for the book’s incredible art program offer profound insight through the eyes of twentieth-century art historians speaking about specific pieces of art featured throughout. Significantly changed in this edition is the chapter on “The Late Renaissance,” in which Janson offers a new perspective on the subject, tracing in detail the religious art tied to the Catholic Reform movement, whose early history is little known to many readers of art history. Janson has also rearranged early Renaissance art according to genres instead of time sequence, and he has followed the reinterpretation of Etruscan art begun in recent years by German and English art historians. With a truly humanist approach, this book gives written and visual meaning to the captivating story of what artists have tried to express—and why—for more than 30,000 years.
