Dynamics, motion, and sensation are karate’s connective tissue—and they are the heart of this book. As a lifelong student of martial arts, J. D. Swanson, PhD, had searched through piles of books on form and function. Stand here, they said. Step there. But where movement was concerned, not one of them went deep enough. No one discussed dynamics—the actual feeling of the moves. Martial instruction, both in print and in person, tends to focus on stances and finishing positions. But dynamics, motion, sensation . . . they are karate’s connective tissue—and they are the heart of this book. Karate Science: Dynamic Movement will help you understand the mechanics of the human body. Swanson describes these principles in incredible detail, drawing on examples from several styles of karate, as well as aikido, taekwondo, and judo. Whatever your martial background, applying this knowledge will make your techniques better, stronger, and faster. • Understand the major types of techniques, including their outward appearances and internal feelings. • Master the core principles behind these feelings. • Learn the biomechanics and dynamics of core movement. Karate Science: Dynamic Movement is filled with examples, anecdotes, and beautiful illustrations. Although Shotokan karate is the author’s frame of reference, the principles of human mechanics translate to all martial styles. This book features • Clear and insightful explanations of dynamic movement. • Over 100 illustrations. • Profound but accessible analysis of the kihon, or fundamentals of Shotokan karate. “Karate Science: Dynamic Movement is rooted in the teachings of the masters,” Swanson says. “This book nucleates that knowledge, clarifying and distilling the key principles behind movement dynamics. This is the next evolution of karate books.”

This fuctinal CD-ROM provides a software accompaniment to the book 'The Scientific and clinical applications...' This CD-ROM is set up in the Physio Tools platform and allows users to order, edit, and download exercise programs ; as well as sort exercises by body part, sport activity or special population for quick reference; develop protocols for elastic resistance exercises and; provide clean printed handouts with instructions for patients.
This is a book about a friend of mine who loves Martial Arts, especially karate. Sensei Pete Ratcliff is the chief instructor at Miyabi-Ryu (Oldham) club. He started to take an interest in martial arts over 30 years ago in 1979. He went on to train in Shotokan Karate in 1984 under Sensei Fred Jones. Sensei Pete has trained with some great names in martial arts such as Andy Sherry, Charles Gidley, Jimmy Edwards and Frank Brennan. Sensei Pete joined the British National Team in 1986 and trained with them until 1990 successfully entering both Kata and Kumita competitions. Sensei Pete has explored other styles of martial arts such as Shukokai Karate, Thai-boxing and Kung-fu. Sensei Pete is currently studying Ju-jitsu under Sensei Andy Wilshaw. Sensei Pete has also trained with Grand Masters such as Jack Hogan, Joe Hess, Bill Thurston and other Masters such as Frankco Sanguinetti, Joao Fernandes, Toni Kauhanen and Sensei Dave Macintyre. This book covers the general laws governing human biomechanics through an extensive review of martial arts techniques and references to fundamental theory. Using straightforward mathematics and physics, this work covers indepth the anatomical foundation of biomechanics and physiological foundation of human motion through specific and relevant martial arts applications. This book also covers the kinematics and kinetics of biomechanics via examples from martial arts and their comparison to different sports techniques. It is written to be used and referenced by biomechanical professionals and martial arts enthusiasts.
