When the breathing got worse he went into the adjacent room and got the copy of Dante. All that night and the night before he had been watching the dying...When a mirror was required to be brought she looked at it, moving her head restlessly this way and that. He knew that the swelling was a portent of some kind, a message from the outer darkness, an omen. - The Dying ALTHOUGH BEST KNOWN as one of Scotland's greatest modern poets, Iain Crichton Smith was also prolific as a writer of short stories. These pieces form a central part of his oeuvre, demonstrating the full range and versatility of his literary talent. From humour to tragedy, from inner monologues to extrovert surrealism, the diversity of his writing indicates the extraordinary range of his own reading and mental world. Crichton Smith wrote short stories throughout his life. Some are fragments, others almost novellas, and the best of them all show him to be an author of unique sensitivity and intelligence. These two collections, comprising the complete English stories, include over 45 stories never before published in book form, as well as others that have been out of print for many years, thus making it possible to judge Crichton Smith's achievement as a writer in full. Incorporates stories from Survival Without Error, The Black and the Red and The Village.
This collection, unique to the Modern Library, gathers seven of Dostoevsky's key works and shows him to be equally adept at the short story as with the novel. Exploring many of the same themes as in his longer works, these small masterpieces move from the tender and romantic White Nights, an archetypal nineteenth-century morality tale of pathos and loss, to the famous Notes from the Underground, a story of guilt, ineffectiveness, and uncompromising cynicism, and the first major work of existential literature. Among Dostoevsky's prototypical characters is Yemelyan in The Honest Thief, whose tragedy turns on an inability to resist crime. Presented in chronological order, in David Magarshack's celebrated translation, this is the definitive edition of Dostoevsky's best stories.

When a renegade necromancer wrenches him from eternal slumber and into a world gone terribly, bizarrely wrong, all Jim wants is to find a way to die properly, once and for all. On his side, he's got a few shambling corpses, an inept thief, and a powerful death wish. But he's up against tough odds: angry mobs of adventurers, a body falling apart at the seams — and a team of programmers racing a deadline to hammer out the last few bugs in their AI. *Mogworld is the debut novel from video-game icon Yahtzee Croshaw (Zero Punctuation)! The King of King's Road and a vital player in England's bid for victory at the 2010 World Cup, Frank Lampard is a footballer of genuine, dynamic majesty. The East End boy who's become a West End star, he's hailed by fans, critics, players and managers worldwide as a goal-scoring genius. His tireless achievements from West Ham, Chelsea and England have established him as a bona fide legend in the game and confirmed that 'Lamps' is the perfect, highly-tuned, magnificent midfield machine. This upbeat and authoritative book chronicles his inspiring journey from apprentice schoolboy to worldwide fame. His footballer father, the former West Ham and England player Frank Lampard Senior, believed in his son's talent from the off. He taught him the work ethic learned from Bobby Moore and other heroes of England's 1966 World Cup Squad. He was unstinting in his determination for young Frank to be a winner in the family business. In this fascinating biography, acclaimed author Douglas Thompson examines Lampard's inspiring, triumphant journey to the top, from his early days of enduring chants on the pitch at Upton Park to his current, glorious reign at Stamford Bridge. He also looks at the impact of how recent events have affected the midfielder: his joy at the birth of his second daughter, Isla; his pain at the separation from Elen Rives and his grief over the death of his beloved mum, Pat, to whom he pays tribute every time he scores one of his breathtaking goals.
In this stunning work of historical fiction, LR Penn has concocted a breathtaking epic adventure that begins in 1890 in a small Zulu village in South Africa but spans three centuries and two continents. It is also a personal memoir that tells the story of a family torn apart by a racist totalitarian regime. The book examines a series of powerful conflicts: the cultural clash between ancient ethnic traditions and encroaching Western values; the political battle between the underground resistance movement and the repressive military strength of a modern nation state; and stirring personal conflicts, as illustrated by the impossibly difficult choices that the novel's heroes are forced to make - between the quest for liberation and the pursuit of love, between a family's security and a people's freedom. Diamonds on a River of Tears presents an in depth portrait of day-to-day life in a society altogether out of balance, playfully juxtaposing its comic absurdities and tragic injustices, but ultimately handing down a moral indictment that all of contemporary civilization will have to face.
Djogbachiachuwa is an attempt by the Liberian Literature Project 2012 set forth by the Liberian History, Education & Development, Inc. (LIHEDE) to close this literary gap. It is also an attempt to have the rest of the world to read more of Liberian literature through the eyes of Liberians other than themselves. It is believed that people who do not know their own history, culture or language have nothing of worth and beauty to pass on to successive generations, and is thus doomed and condemned to perpetual warfare and poverty. The Liberian Literature Anthology Project 2012 is an endeavor to depart from this self-defeating historical trend to produce an Anthology of Liberian literature that draws on the tradition of each ethnic subgroup in Liberia.
