Fans around the world adore the bestselling No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series and its proprietor, Precious Ramotswe, Botswana’s premier lady detective. In this charming series, Mma Ramotswe—with help from her loyal associate, Grace Makutsi—navigates her cases and her personal life with wisdom, good humor, and the occasional cup of tea. Mma Makutsi, who has recently been promoted to co-director, has been encouraging Mma Ramotswe to update to more modern office practices. An unusual case, however, will require both of them to turn their attention firmly to the past. A young Canadian woman who spent her early childhood in Botswana requests the agency’s help in recalling her life there. Precious and Grace set out to locate the house that the woman lived in and the caretaker who looked after her many years ago. But when the journey takes an unexpected turn, they are forced to consider whether some things are better left in the past. Mma Ramotswe dispenses help and sympathy with the graciousness and warmth for which she is so well known, and everyone involved is led to surprising insights into the healing power of compassion, forgiveness, and new beginnings.
In the latest book in the widely beloved No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series Precious Ramotswe takes on a case for a childhood friend, but when her inquiries attract the attention of a prominent politician she lands herself in more trouble than maybe even she can handle. Mma Ramotswe happily reconnects with an old friend when his teaching job brings him back to Gaborone. In the course of their conversations, though, Mma Ramotswe learns that Hope, one of their mutual acquaintances, has fallen on hard times. This initially comes as a shock to her, as the woman came from wealth. But when she learns that Hope has recently separated from her husband, a local politician with a less than stellar reputation, she becomes determined to find out the truth. Elsewhere, Charlie and Fanwell are also involved in tricky matters of the heart, as Queenie-Queenie, Charlie's girlfriend, seems to have transferred her affections to Fanwell. It's up to Mma Makutsi to set things right, but she may be too distracted by Violet Sephotho, who has somehow been appointed to the board of a charity. What is Violet up to now? As all of these mysteries are unravelled, Mma Ramotswe and the entire No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency will be reminded of the value of tried and true wisdom--she chooses to believe in goodness, that if our hearts are open, true equality can be found with one another. But in this world can that assumption be justified? It will take all her ingenuity and great moral sense to get to the heart of the matter.

The next book in the perennially adored No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series sees Precious Ramotswe calling upon all her maternal instincts when she's faced with a two-ton case. Mma Ramotswe is pleased with how her business is doing. She is a bit hazy about when exactly the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency was founded, but takes the view that it is time to have anniversary celebrations. She and Mma Makutsi set up a committee, consisting of the two of them, to plan the celebratory events, but the committee turns into something apparently permanent, meeting from time to time and rather enjoying the meetings (over lunch). The rationale of the committee is lost sight of, and no celebration ever takes place. Some things, Mma Ramotswe decides, are enjoyed more in the anticipation than the execution. Meanwhile, at a nearby game reserve, an orphaned baby elephant has been delivered. The reserve does its best to look after the elephant, but encounters opposition from neighbours. Charlie, the Agency's assistant detective/mechanic, hears that a group of young men are going to dispose of the elephant. Charlie is also juggling his engagement to Queenie Queenie, which is put into jeopardy when her father gets cold feet due to rumours spread by Queenie Queenie's brother about Charlie's past. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but can Mma Ramotswe and the rest of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency come together to raise a pipsqueak pachyderm and see an engagement through to its rightful outcome? We may find out in this novel.
